MEDIA RELEASE – JUNE 9, 2015
Peterborough’s business community is celebrating today, as it was announced the region has been designated as an official Startup Canada Community. The Startup Canada Communities Program is a national network that will link Peterborough’s entrepreneurs with local and cross-national resources, mentors, funding, and space through a network with offline and online connections. Peterborough now joins 19 other Startup Canada Communities across the country, and is the only Startup Canada Community between Ottawa and the Greater Toronto Area.
“This designation through Startup Canada helps to put Peterborough on the map as a unique and unparalleled destination to start and grow a business,” said Startup Peterborough spokesperson, and local entrepreneur, Paul Bennett. “Startup Peterborough is an entrepreneur-led initiative that empowers our community by being a conduit that connects aspiring entrepreneurs with the people, mentors, groups and agencies who can help them succeed.”
In early 2015, a group of entrepreneurs along with Peterborough Economic Development staff met to discuss how to catalyze Peterborough’s growing entrepreneurial community by taking part in the national and global startup movement.
“Entrepreneurship is the foundation for building Peterborough’s future as a successful post-industrial economy, and is a key focus of our 2015-19 Strategic Plan,” said Lorne Kelsey, Director of Investment Expansion with Peterborough Economic Development. “The majority of new jobs and growth are coming from small businesses – our designation as a Startup Canada Community provides the support that our entrepreneurs and entrepreneur-owned businesses need.”
Peterborough’s new designation as a Startup Canada Community was announced at a launch event held at The Venue in downtown Peterborough this evening. Local entrepreneurs, community organizations and Robert Decher, Startup Canada Program Manager, attended the event.
“A culture in Peterborough that supports entrepreneurs and small businesses every step of the way is key to growing the local economy and reinforcing Peterborough as a great place to live and work,” said Decher. “By connecting entrepreneurs to tools, networks, advisors, and opportunities at local, national, and global levels, Startup Peterborough will be the catalyst of a thriving startup community that creates jobs and retains local talent.”
Startup Peterborough is a collaboration that will facilitate connections between entrepreneurs and the local organizations and institutions that provide resources and programming for startup businesses.
